The Reason Real Madrid Have 'Total Confidence' in Teenager Thiago Pitarch
Whenever a teenage creates Real Madrid history in a pivotal European tie against Manchester City, it inevitably draws praise and the spotlight.
During his maiden start in the tournament - and fifth appearance for the team - the young midfielder made a strong impression as the fifteen-time Champions League winners secured a 3-0 round of 16 first leg advantage at the Bernabeu.
The teenager, who also had his club debut in the play-off round a few weeks prior with a cameo off the bench at Sporting Lisbon, then helped Los Blancos overcome the English champions in Tuesday's return to confirm a quarter-final place.
At 18 years and 226 days, Pitarch became the club's youngest player to begin two matches in the Champions League's latter rounds, surpassing Brazil forward Vini Jr's record by 10 days.
A Meteoric Rise From La Fabrica
This talent is the most recent to emerge from the famed youth system and is rapidly cementing himself as one of the manager's most promising young players.
He signed for Real from CD Leganes in the summer of 2023, having previously been with Atletico and Getafe youth teams, and initially featuring for the under-19 side, where he quickly made a strong impression.
He progressed to the reserve side and it was in a friendly match in which they played against the academy's first team, then managed by Arbeloa, where the teenager is said to have drawn the eye of the current Real boss, who took over from the previous coach in January.
Reports would later label the moment as "an instant connection," adding he stood out not only for his skill on the ball, but for the energy, personality and determination he brought to the team.
'His Greatest Quality Is His Character'
During the pre-season of 2025, ex-manager Xabi Alonso invited Pitarch to practice with the first team and gave him minutes during pre-season.
However, it was the change in manager that proved the turning point in his development as he came on as a second-half replacement in both ties against Benfica that led to the meeting with Pep Guardiola's team.
"I have dreamed of this each night when sleeping, the very first time I began playing the game, every day you head to training and each day you play a match," stated Pitarch following his first appearance.
"I've just achieved my dream with the best team in the planet and in the best competition."
Given a first start in the Spanish league against his former club - where he was for four years after moving from Atletico in 2018 - he has kept his place for the following four as fitness issues to Jude Bellingham and Ceballos created an opportunity.
The teenager has seized it with displays that have belied his age and inexperience.
"He's a extremely fast footballer, and you can see what he's capable of," said Arbeloa. "He is incredibly dynamic, with excellent stamina, effort and mobility."
Pitarch's mentality has also impressed his manager.
"His greatest quality is his personality," added Arbeloa. "He constantly demands the possession, and when pressed, he remains unfazed.
"I realize people are surprised to see him make his debut in a Champions League match, but he is selected because I had total trust in him to do his normal game.
"He will continue to get opportunities with the main squad. It is delightful to coach a talent like him."
A Future International Decision
Born in a Madrid suburb, in the Madrid region, and grew up fully immersed in Spanish football, moving through local academies before joining Real Madrid's famous youth academy.
He holds both Moroccan and Spanish citizenship, offering him the option to represent both nations at senior international level.
Under international regulations, players may represent multiple nations at youth level without being permanently tied, with the final decision only binding once they appear in a competitive senior international match.
Pitarch has played for the Spanish national team at youth level, representing both the U19 and under-20 teams, and took part in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where La Roja reached the quarter-finals.
Despite this, he has not yet decided to either full national side, who are watching his progress with interest.
In a recent interview, the player said: "I have not taken my final decision so far. My situation is great with the Spanish federation, but I will reach a decision soon."
His situation mirrors that of other bi-national talents such as Real team-mate Diaz and Barcelona forward Yamal. Whereas 18-year-old Yamal opted for Spain, Brahim opted to represent Morocco.
Focus on the Future
At present, his attention is on making his mark in the Real side and repaying his manager's belief.
He featured for 74 minutes in the two-one victory at the Etihad, which sealed a 5-1 overall triumph and a last-eight tie with the German champions.
He was replaced by another academy player in Manuel Angel underscored the coach's confidence in the next generation to aid the team chase trophies to come.
Following his impressive impact to date on the Champions League, Pitarch is expected to be a central figure in that.
"The manager handles me the same. We deal with it very naturally. I attempt not to think about it too much - I must deserve my playing time on the field," he said following the success at Etihad Stadium.
