The network's Premier New Show of This Year Secures a Major Renewal for an Additional Two Seasons.

In October of last year, Adult Swim welcomed back its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. But, later that same month, the channel introduced a brand-new animated series with a markedly softer vibe. Haha, You Clowns proved to be gentle and comforting, reminiscent of a cartoon version of a serene talk show. In an era often marked by cynicism, this show's earnestness found an audience and propelled it a breakout hit.

A Major Commitment

On December 18th, the network made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for a further two seasons. This gives showrunner Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to develop the world of the Campbell family. The series follows three well-mannered teenage brothers whose defining trait is their deep love for their widowed father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four central characters.

"I am incredibly thankful to the fans of the show who took a chance on the show and shared it with others," remarked Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for a little longer."

A President's Endorsement

In the same announcement laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and uniquely eerie." He specifically highlighted the fans who embraced the show and supported its peculiarly charming style.

"All of you got behind this new show, praised it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Different Kind of Comedy

Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a comforting antidote" to more cynical adult animated fare. Viewers found something surprisingly comfy about observing this lovable family navigate their daily lives.

In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa stated his hope to evolve comedy past its prevailing layer of irony. He linked this trend to various cultural shifts.

“There's this level of irony that we are trapped in,” noted Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we need to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”

The Path Forward

Now, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa may well catalyze that comedic shift. Or at the very least, the renewal ensures audiences more opportunities to bask in the warm glow of the endearing Campbell clan.

The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The entire series is ready to watch on HBO Max.
