The megacity Rises to Toxic Pollution After Festival of Lights

On Tuesday morning citizens of the planet's dirtiest urban center were faced with breathing extremely polluted air that was classified as the "severe" range.

Alarming Pollution Measurements

Various sections of the capital showed an air quality index exceeding 500, which represents a tenfold increase over the recommended threshold set by the global health authority.

Certain monitoring stations, concentrations of dangerous airborne particles reached peaks of 1800, equating to fifteen to twenty times exceeding healthy levels.

Fireworks Ban and Current Changes

Since 2020, the government had implemented a comprehensive restriction on the distribution and bursting of pyrotechnics during Diwali due to their significant contribution to the dangerous haze that blankets the metropolis as the cold season approaches.

Yet earlier this year, the recently formed local government petitioned the judicial authority to propose a modification of the ban.

The suggestion was allowing "eco-friendly fireworks" – which have been questioned by environmental experts as being only about 30% less polluting – as a middle ground between "heritage and environment".

Legal Decision and Implementation

To the disappointment of public health and environmental advocates, judges agreed to the request, mandating that green firecrackers could be ignited during limited periods throughout the celebrations.

On Monday night, there was widespread flouting of the regulated periods across the city, with little enforcement regarding whether the fireworks being used were actually the more environmentally friendly version.

Numerous air quality sensors throughout the capital showed pollution peaking around midnight to the most severe levels recorded during the festival in at least three years.

Cross-Border Implications

The proliferation of firecrackers during Diwali also sparked a dispute with neighbouring the neighboring country, with officials in Pakistani Punjab pointing to worsening air quality in Lahore on contaminants traveling from India following the events.

Persistent Environmental Problem

The dangerously high concentrations of air contamination in Delhi have continued as a significant challenge for over a decade and a half, with the situation showing no improvement.

Around Diwali, the levels of toxic particulate matter in the environment has been observed to spike to significantly exceeding the worst records ever documented in the Chinese city, which was once viewed as the planet's dirtiest urban center.

Multiple Contamination Factors

The situation in the capital is attributed to a mix of different contributors including transportation pollution, dust, building projects, rubbish burning and smoke from farm burning in adjacent states of Punjab and Haryana.

Within these states, agricultural workers illegally burn crop residue to clear them quickly, producing toxic smog that becomes contained over the capital as winter air descends.

Public Health and Economic Impact

Public health and economic impact on the approximately 33 million residents residing in the Delhi area is substantial, according to numerous investigations.

The contaminated air results in elevated rates of nervous system, heart and circulatory and lung disorders, and can potentially cause malignancies.

Environmental contamination is calculated to be accounting for approximately 10k untimely fatalities annually in the capital.
