The Legendary Jimmy Cliff, Music Legend and Cultural Figure, Passes Away at Eighty-One Years of Age

The world grieves the loss of Jimmy Cliff, the renowned Jamaican-born reggae singer and performer whose captivating vocal talent was instrumental in spreading the reggae genre across the globe. He passed away at the age of 81.

“It’s with profound sadness that I announce that my beloved husband, Jimmy Cliff, has passed away due to a seizure episode and subsequent pneumonia,” wrote his spouse Latifa Chambers on Instagram. “I am thankful for his family, close friends, peers in the arts and coworkers who shared his journey. To all his fans around the world, please know that your encouragement was his strength during his whole career … Jimmy, my darling, may you rest in peace. I will honor your wishes.” The message was co-signed by their children, Lilty and Aken.

Cliff was beloved for hits such as “You Can Get It If You Really Want”, “I Can See Clearly Now” and “Wonderful World, Beautiful People”. His upbeat sound and positive spirit brought him a large and loyal following.

In addition to his musical achievements, Cliff starred in the 1972 drama film “The Harder They Come”, a role that received critical praise and is viewed as a landmark of Jamaican cinema.

Jimmy Cliff was among the select few of artists, including Bob Marley and other greats, to be awarded the prestigious Order of Merit from Jamaica.
