The Gory Animated Film Ending That Stays With Fans
Among every adult-oriented animated films I’ve personally watched, no other has remained with me quite like the terror-laced ending of a viscerally violent and overwhelingly transgressive 2022 movie The Unicorn Wars.
In 2015’s, the Spain-based filmmaker developed a dark, somber , often savage world that included several minor , desolate glimmers of hope.
While Unicorn Wars appears as it came from an impulse to expand animation further, the filmmaker explained that it was rather a try to convey a global, cross-cultural theme about “the shared root of every conflict.”
That idea is conveyed through a squad of brightly hued teddy bears , obviously inspired by a well-known line of cuddly characters.
Being raised in a community focused on warmongering and the military-industrial complex, a lot of these creatures are obsessed with slaughtering unicorns, thanks to a religious scripture that claims the bears they were once kings of the woods, before the unicorns expelled them.
A few did not entirely fallen for the indoctrination, and choose to experiment with substances or fornicate in the forest.
In contrast to their friendly equivalents, these vivid animals display sexual organs and definite urges.
For a particular notably brutal, skeptical animal, the bear named Bluey, the battle against the unicorns becomes a path to control — and especially to supremacy above his softer, kinder brother the bear Tubby.
Bluey acts as a tormentor and an obvious sociopath , and when terror dominates his group and takes his teammates individually, he takes increasingly influence personally, via progressively gory, destructive ways.

“Initially, it seems like a humorous movie,” the filmmaker said. “Yet it turns into a more dramatic and melancholic movie. And ultimately, it becomes a scary feature.”
Unicorn Wars commences feeling a bit like one of the most whimsical features by a legendary animator, that discover a naughty glee in permitting cartoon characters swear, shoot each other, or sex each other up.
Afterward it becomes closer to a bleaker film from the same director, featuring progressively graphic violence and a noticeable relation to genuine suffering of war.
Ultimately, it’s an outright Grand Guignol carnage.
