The Duke of York relinquishes his title as York's Duke.
He is surrendering his designations, including the the Duke, he has stated in a personal statement.
He has been under mounting attention over his connections with disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein, with demands for the Palace to take steps against him.
That now seems to have caused the figure deciding to willingly give up his honors and to relinquish membership of the Garter Order.
In his message he said he continued to "strongly deny the accusations against me".
"In talks with the sovereign, and my close and wider family, we have concluded the ongoing claims about me take away from the duties of the King and the royal household," said a message from the royal.
"I have decided, as I always have, to put my duty to my relatives and land first.
"I stand by my resolution five years ago to stand back from royal engagements.
"With the monarch's consent, we think I must now go a additional measure. I will therefore no longer use my honor or the awards which have been granted to me. As I have said earlier, I strongly refute the allegations against me."
The royal has encountered a series of controversies, including a legal case he settled with an accuser, inquiries about his money matters and his association with an alleged Chinese spy.
He will stay a prince - but will discontinue to be the York's Duke, a honor granted from his the late Queen, the Queen Elizabeth II.
The prince had already stopped to be a "active member" and had lost the use of his royal style and no longer was seen at public engagements. His role now will be even more lessened.
His ex-wife will be known as Sarah Ferguson and no longer the Duchess, but their offspring will continue to have the designation of princesses.
He has encountered intense scrutiny over his links with convicted sex offender the financier, more recently including inquiries about when he had truly ended contact.
In his BBC Newsnight interview, the royal had said that he had severed all ties with the financier after they had been pictured together in NYC in the end of 2010.
But correspondence sent in early 2011 later came to light implying that the prince had privately continued in touch with him, including exchanging a message: "Keep in close touch and we'll play some more soon!"
There had been growing annoyance in the royal household at the controversies that persisted to surround the figure.
In the coming days a book released after death by Giuffre will be published which is anticipated to bring further focus on his connection with the plaintiff and Jeffrey Epstein.
