The Divinity Developer Clarifies Its Application of Generative AI for Upcoming Divinity Game
The developer behind popular RPGs like Baldur's Gate 3 and Divinity: Original Sin has recently teased its new project, creating a wave of anticipation within the industry. However, recent statements from the studio's co-founder have brought nuance to the discussion, focusing on the developer's stance toward AI tools.
Augmenting Workflows, Not Cutting Jobs
In a latest statement, the studio's founder explained that the developer is employing machine learning for specific supporting functions. These include enhancing pitch decks, creating early-stage visual ideas, and creating temporary copy.
Crucially, Vincke emphasized that the shipping assets in the game will be crafted exclusively by real writers. "We are developing everything in-house," he said.
Larian is continuously increasing our roster of writers and are busily putting together narrative groups.
Since concept art is being specifically mentioned — we right now have 23 concept artists and have job openings for additional creatives.
Everything we do is additive and aimed at letting our team spend additional energy on making content.
Every machine learning application applied correctly is a boost to a developer's routine, not a substitute for their talent.
Tempering Reactions with Clear Intent
The news of using AI originally provoked concern among a segment of the community. In reply, Vincke offered further detail on public forums.
"At Larian, we employ these tools to research ideas, in the same way we use Google and physical media," he stated. "In the initial planning process we use it as a simple sketch for layout which we then swap out with authentic artwork."
He noted, "We've hired artists for their creative vision, not for their capacity to follow what a AI generates."
Key Areas of AI Integration
Vincke had earlier outlined the studio's targeted approach to AI and ML, categorizing its use into three main functions:
- Streamlining Repetitive Work: This includes refining animations, dialogue cleanup, and technical processes like adapting animations for different models.
- Accelerated Iteration: Using systems to rapidly prototype simple versions of mechanics to validate concepts before full implementation.
- Long-Term Aspirations: Researching how AI could one day facilitate new forms of player agency, especially in simulating player-driven narratives in a complex RPG.
He clearly affirmed that key artistic areas — including visual art — are are absolutely not areas where the company is replacing human input. Conversely, Larian is expanding its staff in these precise positions.
"We are not shipping a game with any AI components, nor considering trimming down staff to swap them out with AI," Vincke summarized.
