The 'Breaking Bad' Creator Reveals He Has an Idea of How Pluribus Will End... Currently.
Vince Gilligan never anticipated that his new science-fiction series would turn into a breakout success. “I am so grateful to the audience,” Gilligan says. “I was surprised by the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.”
As the debut season of the acclaimed program wrapping up—and Season 2 greenlit and underway—the creative team reflected on the audience reaction and whether it will influence the future direction of Pluribus.
On the Incredible Audience Reaction
One could easily to get swayed by the constant speculation and online debates regarding Pluribus. The creator is striving to ignore the noise.
“It's like being an endless supply of your favorite dessert and being laughing uncontrollably,” he says. “It's amazing, but I get wind of it anecdotally, and that's intentional. Never in my life Googled myself, nor do I ever intend to. It's quite the opposite. It's a rabbit hole I know I would disappear down and then I'd be never leaving the house from Home Depot and I'd never leave my living room.”
Despite his concerted efforts, there’s no escaping the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The best he and his team can do is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.
“We make no attempt to tailor anything,” says Alison Tatlock. “The narrative we craft is not impacted by audience chatter.”
“It's wiser to keep our heads down and working,” he chimes in.

So if the writers aren't taking cues by public opinion, can we assume they have already decided how Pluribus will ultimately end? Essentially yes… with some caveats.
“There are some compelling concepts about how the story could conclude,” Gilligan says. “however, we remain prepared to discard a good idea for a more brilliant plan. This approach has served us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We change course when we conceive of something superior and I expect we'll continue doing that.”
Alternatively, if they hit a wall, executive producer Gordon Smith has a rather amusing idea to serve as a last resort.
“My recurring proposal is that the entire story is inside a snow globe, and that we'll pull back at the end and that's where they've been all along,” Smith jokes, “but no one is buying it.”
Then again, why not reference the legendary finales?
“I'd love for Carol to wake up in bed beside Bob Newhart,” Gilligan adds, smiling.
