Weather experts have indicated a chilly start to the new year, with snow expected across much of the UK. Those celebrating have been told to wrap up as sub-zero temperatures are forecast for New Year's Eve.

Hogmanay Events Go Ahead Despite Forecasts

The Scottish capital's renowned Hogmanay festivities are expected to proceed, unlike last year's postponement. This proceeds amid yellow warnings for snow over northern Scotland.

"An icy New Year's Eve evening for those out celebrating, so warmer clothes will be needed," noted the weather service.

Displays Under Open but Cold Skies

Across the UK, the weather is likely to be suited to fireworks displays, with dry conditions and clear skies. Readings are forecast to be low, so extra layers a necessity, as per forecasters.

To the north, skies will be more overcast, but this is not anticipated to hamper visibility for viewing fireworks. "There is no expectation of low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," added one forecaster.

Broad Snow Warnings for Friday

As we enter Friday, snow alerts are in place across Northern Ireland and from Wales, over the north-west, the West Midlands and reaching London and the majority of the south-east of England.

• Disruptions and cancellations are likely on trains and buses.

Readings Set to Fall Further

As 2026 begins, it will be "chilly no matter where you are," said forecaster Simon Partridge. Conditions are set to drop further as snow and gale-force winds are predicted to hit the north of the country.

Around 10cm of snow could accumulate to have built up in some areas by Friday morning, reaching up to 30cm on the most elevated routes and peaks.

Public Health Alerts Released

Meanwhile, serious cold weather health warnings have been issued for the north-east and north-west of England. These are due to continue until noon on 5 January, with readings forecast to fall to between 3C and 5C.

Authorities stated this signified the weather was expected to trigger significant impacts across health and social care services. This encompasses a expected uptick in the mortality rate among vulnerable individuals or those in the older age groups.
