The sport of boxing has been a notable downturn this season, with few major fights and considerably fewer engaging contests than typical. The possibility of a serious and intriguing heavyweight clash between Parker and Fabio Wardley at the iconic O₂ Arena brings a measure of relief to the challenged industry. Wardley, a former white-collar slugger, who only took up boxing when he was 20, had zero amateur background and has consistently faced questions regarding his technical limitations. But he is equally near to a opportunity for the championship.

“This is the most significant fight, at the moment, in the heavyweight division. These two guys have stepped up when neither fighter was required to take this bout. Joe Parker is the interim champion and they have formally instructed the champion to fight him, but the Ukrainian was injured. Joseph wants to fight anyway.

“Wardley is also in an excellent situation and he could have just waited for his opportunity. He said ‘I refuse.’ He desired to compete – and versus Parker because it provides him a shot to jump the queue.”

The separation between where Joe is and where people think I am has been a common theme throughout my career.

“He has vast experience for a long time, with a many bouts on his ledger. By no means is he an senior boxer but he has been in the boxing world for a significant time and had some heavy fights. I've also endured brutal fights and I realize they cause wear and tear. He has been in a significantly more of those compared to me.”
