European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted figures that were central to campaigns to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the move.
The bans were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
